Johannesburg - An environmental NGO has laid criminal charges against mining group Platmin for operating an open cast mine on the doorstep of the Pilanesberg Nature Reserve, Beeld reported on Monday.

The mine is situated in a proposed heritage park that would link the Pilanesberg and the Madikwe nature reserves with each other and create a 90km long migration route for the Big Five.

Federation for a Sustainable Environment director Mariette Liefferink said they had brought charges because the mine did not have a water licence.

According to Platmin spokesperson Charmane Russell, the mine had a "draft water licence".

Liefferink said the idea of a "draft water licence" was absurd.

According to the newspaper, Russell refused to provide copies of the draft licence or the environmental impact report that Platmin was legally obliged to undertake, according to the National Environmental Management Act, before they could mine, even though both were public documents.

Moremi Lesejane, the manager of park extensions at the North West Tourism and Parks Agency (NTPA), said the mining, and especially the amount of water Platmin used in the arid region, was a source of great concern.

According to Lesejane mining was inconsistent with the NTPA's ecotourism plans for the region. He said the agency was powerless against Platmin because the mineral resources department had granted the company mining rights.

Susan Deschamps says... There is more than one side to the story. stop blaming the butcheries or shops that sell these products, yes they do use it and what they do might not be right, but then the goverment also has an obligtion as to not let these meats get imported. This is not something that started in the last year, it has been going on for many years. Since we can remember we have all been eating meat and processed products and no one has gotten sick or died of it. Its just a case of some one finding out about venison or chicken or what ever getting used where is is not 'supposed' to get used, now every one is making a fuss about it. Butcheries use venison and or other meats in their products to bring down the cost of such products, no one will be willing to pay R100 per kg for boerewors or viennas, thats why these products get used. Yes shops do have an obligation to ensure that all their meat packaging is correct that I agree with. There is DNA testing getting done on products, did any one ever bother to find out or to check to the fact that those tests, cannot and will not be able to distiguish the differance between horse and zebra? It might just be possible that all the products now getting slammed for containing horse, might just be something else! The goverment should not have these meats that they now want to know if it is safe or not, get imported, they have state vets test the meat before it gets released in the harbour, so they should know what gets imported and if it is safe. Stop spending billions of rands on private homes and family vacations and start using the money to feed the country, and get our agricultural sector back to where it was, then it would not be necessary to import meats and food from other countries. Some might not agree with me, but that's my opinion. Read the article...
