Cape Town – New York’s Times Square will shutdown effectively for Earth Hour this Saturday, all in the name of energy conservation.

According to the Huffington Post the glitzy and glamorous street will experience a blackout on 29 March for one hour between 20:30 to 21:30.

The shiniest intersection in the world, for the first time will also shut down its New Years Eve ball.

Advertisers spend more than $23m a year to shine of the massive billboards. However they have decided to participate in this year’s Earth Hour in an effort to encourage New Yorkers and the world that conserving energy is important.
