Phnom Penh - A new species of snake, dubbed the "wolf snake" for its distinctive long fangs, has been discovered in Cambodia's remote Cardamon Mountains, a researcher said on Wednesday

The snake's chequered black and faun colouring is "highly distinct" and the camouflage may be why it remained undiscovered for so long, Neang Thy, Fauna & Flora International research adviser, told DPA.

"This is brand new for the world," said Thy, who found the snake on a trip to the mountains himself and published a research paper on the new species in Australia last week. "It's non-venomous [but] they have long, large teeth in the front of their mouth like wolf," he said.

The species was given the official name of Lycodon zoosvictoriae, to recognise the support FFI Cambodia has received from the Zoological Parks and Gardens Board of Victoria in Australia over the years.

"It's a small snake, 41 centimetres long," Thy said. "We're not sure yet what it eats ... but maybe geckos and frogs."
