Hanoi - Police in Hanoi are looking for a man who let his dog steer his motorbike in a video clip going viral on state and social media, a traffic department official said on Monday.

The video posted last week shows the man with the dog in front appear to be driving the Honda Dream in the evening for about half a minute, as he keeps telling the dog "Good!"

"It is incredible such action happening in the city," a facebook user posted. "His action is extremely dangerous; he not only put himself and other people in danger but could put his dog at risk."

The clip had 83 000 views on one facebook page.

The police traffic department had issued an order to look for the man, a department official told dpa on condition of anonymity.

"The act deserves harsh criticism and punishment," a Hanoi traffic police officer Nguyen Van Quy was quoted as saying by newspaper Thanh Nien.

If caught, the motorist would be fined up to $320 for "releasing both hands while driving a motorbike," Quy said.

He would also lose his drivers' license for two months, and have his motorbike impounded for a week.

The man was also not wearing a helmet, which is punishable by a 10-dollar fine.

There was no immediate word on whether the dog would face charges.
