Cape Town – Researchers have gone to great lengths to digitally reconstruct a scene 110 million years ago where two dinosaurs chased each other.

According to the BBC the chase was preserved in mud at an ancient river bed site in Texas

Scientists, 70 years ago, removed the track that was fossilised in the river bed and divided it into blocks for further study.

During the years some of the blocks were lost but a research team has managed to reconstruct the chase using old photographs.

Dr Peter Falkingham, from the Royal Veterinary College, believes that he has been able to accurately recreate the epic chase with only 17 photos that were taken by US palaeontologist Roland Bird in 1940.

The chase according to scientists belonged to a very large sauropod, a herbivore and a carnivorous theropod.

Theropods were a group of predators that the Tyrannosaurus rex belonged to.

Dr Falkingham noted that in certain cases the theropod’s tracks were in the sauropod tracks.

Falkingham’s study has allowed the entire chase scene, which is 45m to be viewed for the first time since the blocks were taken from the site.

The researchers used a scanning technique known as photogrammetry.

The technique uses scans and photographs to create a digital model.

Falkingham argues that what his researchers are trying to illustrate is that people can use this method to reconstruct damaged sites and objects, if there are photographs present.
