Cape Town - Conservationists, police and volunteers are tracking two poachers over the Magaliesberg after a rhino cow was poached.

Isabella, or Charlize, depending on who you speak to, was rescued a few weeks ago from the liquidated Aloe Ridge Hotel and Nature Reserve at Broederstroom after her mate disappeared.

At 02:10 on Monday morning two shots were heard. Three minutes later staff of Glen Afric Lodge were on the scene of the poaching. The horn had already been removed and the two poachers were escaping through thick bush. Unfortunately the rhino was dead.

Police who were patrolling in the area arrived soon afterwards and the chase began. The tracking team has followed the pair of poachers high into the Magaliesberg and are hot on their heels.

Police, volunteers, in fact many of the Broederstroom community have been helping to catch the poachers. Staff at Glen Afric say the support has been amazing.

Police have confirmed the incident and the ongoing tracking operation.

Staff are optimistic that the two poachers will be caught.
