Kimberley - The SPCA could have saved thousands of fish which died in the Rooifontein vlei (marsh), Northern Cape, an official said on Wednesday.

"It is often overlooked that the National Council of SPCA operates nationally and responds to all disasters and situations involving animals. Fish are no exception," spokesperson for the organisation's Farm Animal Protection Unit (Fapu), Andries Venter, said.

Fapu is among six nationally operational units of the National Council of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

SPCA officials arrived in the area on Wednesday morning after receiving reports on Tuesday evening.

Venter said all the fish, identified as barbel, had perished by the time they arrived.

"This wide-scale loss of life is regrettable. We thank those volunteers who tried to salvage the situation."

The Volksblad newspaper reported that they died when the vlei dried up for the first time in three years. Volunteers tried, but failed, to help by pumping thousands of litres of water onto the fish.
