Cape Town – Well this is a first, a group of scientist in the US have decided to take cow manure and turn it into drinkable water.

The innovative technology takes the all the nutrients from manure and converts it into drinkable water for livestock.

According to a report by the Huffington Post, the McLanahan nutrient separation system was developed, believe it or not 10 years ago at the Michigan State University.

It hopes to be a noteworthy tool used in farms in order to use waste as a resource.

Steve Safferman, professor at the university said that the technology will help in areas across the US where drought is a very real issue.

Water availability is a very important issue, especially in agriculture so having this kind of technology is vital, especially for farms that specialises in livestock, according to Safferman.

The McLanahan system makes use of an anaerobic digester. This system takes manure and breaks it down. The bacteria is removed and turned into a gas that can additionally be used as energy.

The system’s digester has a air stripping mechanism that uses ultrafiltration and reverse osmosis to separate pollutants from clean water.

The creators of this system also note that it does not only create energy and water but the system also makes the manure more eco-friendly, by stripping harmful substances and gases such as ammonia.

What’s left is a usable and greener fertiliser.
