Dakar - A boat that capsized off the coast of Senegal's capital is now leaking diesel fuel into the ocean near a scenic island.

Senegalese Environment Minister Haidar El Ali said on Monday the accident took place late on Friday near Madeleine Island, about a 15-minute ride by wooden boat from Dakar.

The minister said authorities were trying to do all that they can to contain the spill near the island, whose waters are home to a diverse array of fish.

The boat was carrying about 45 000 litres of diesel fuel. Crews are trying to get the boat out of the area though initially they had been hampered by high winds.

Senegalese authorities said the boat had a fishing licence from neighbouring Mauritania and an investigation will be conducted.
