Tuk Tuks to transport Gautrain commuters

Cape Town – The Old Mutual Foundation launched a new transport initiative to commuters in the Sandton business district.   

Shesha Tuks was conceptualized and formed on the premise of exploiting a niche market in South Africa and aims to contribute to relieving pressure on existing transport alternatives.

Research was done into which type of vehicle would be suitable and it was agreed that the Piaggio product would make the most sense as it has an established local presence through Vespa scooters.

Shesha aims to offer a service that is convenient, cost effective and reliable to its customer base, with the focus being experiential.

Sarah Gurney, account manager for Old Mutual’s Shesha Tuk Tuks campaign, said the foundation was looking for ways with a visually impressive platform to raise the profile of some of its beneficiaries and allow Old Mutual to demonstrate the great work this CSI division does for previously disadvantaged communities across the country.

The Shesha Tuk Tuks will act as moving billboards for five beneficiaries of the Old Mutual Foundation corporate social investment (CSI) initiatives. Those five beneficiaries are LEAP Science and Maths School, the Heiveld Co-operative, the Bulungula Lemon Grass Ladies, Old Mutual Legends Programme and the Wildlands Conservation Trust.

“Old Mutual then partnered with Shesha Tuks who have introduced the Tuks to Johannesburg, and Old Mutual became their marketing partner,” Gurney told News24.

According to Gurney the Shesha Tuks will be much cheaper for commuters than taking a normal taxi.

“Gautrain commuters who arrive at the Sandton Station will have a fun and affordable transport alternative around the Sandton central business district as a taxi may be double the price.

“However the Tuks only operate in a 3km radius, where fares are R25 per Tuk Tuk journey, and a 6km radius ride that will cost R35.”

This transport service which was launched on Tuesday will be free of charge for the next two weeks and commuters will only be charged thereafter.

Gurney said the Shesha Tuks will only operate in the Sandton business district and can be found outside the Gautrain Sandton Station.
