Snow possible over Western Cape

The Western Cape lived up to this notorious nickname over the weekend, as snow, rain, hail, lightning and thunder were reported around the province. Take a look at these pics.

Cape Town - The South African Weather Service has confirmed a possibility for snow over the Western Cape on Saturday, but said that it would only occur over the mountain peaks.

"There is a possibility of snow over the high-lying areas - actually it's going to be on the mountain peaks," weather forecaster Stella Nake told News24.

She said that the weather system heading for Cape Town was les intense than an earlier system on 1 June which delivered a significant amount of snow to Sutherland.

South Africans have been taking to social network Twitter for some time as chatter about the possibility of snow spread through the micro-blogging site.

"Brace yourselves..#cptSNOW on its way! #CapeTown," tweeted Cape Town WeatherSA (@cptweather).

Nake though, said that it was unlikely that there would be high levels of snow, despite the cold temperatures.

"This one [weather system] is only going to [cause snow] on the peaks on the mountain; it's not even on the forecast," she said.

The website indicates that there will be strong winds in Cape Town on Friday, but Nake said this will subside over the weekend.

The Cape Town forecast for Saturday is a high of 14°C with rain as a result of the cold front.
