Thandora's first days in the wild

After 23 years of captivity, Thandora, an elephant from Bloemfontein Zoo is walking in the wild again. We take a look at what she's been up to in her first two days of freedom.

Cape Town - Thandora, the released elephant in Gondwana Game Reserve, is slowly getting used to living in the wild.

Thandora met up with a group of cows and a calf a day after being released into the wild.

After displaying a lot of interest in Thandora, the elephant cow herd has moved into a remote section of the reserve.

The rugged terrain has made it rather difficult to locate them. Thondora is currently in a valley where there is abundant water, optimal feeding and a good possibility that the herd will enter the valley again.

John Vogel, Gondwana Wildlife Manager told News24 "At the moment we are trying to locate the herd and once this happens, we will encourage interaction between the animals again".

Thandora spent 23 years in Bloemfontein Zoo before being released 6 weeks ago.

She was kept in a boma initially to acclimatise her to her new food and surroundings. Thandora's fitness and stride length had to be increased before being released into the wild.
