Cape Town - Thandora the elephant has been re-introduced into the wild at Gondwana Game Reserve near Mossel Bay after 23 years in captivity.

The gates to her boma were opened at 14:00 and she has walked free, after initially being hesitant.

The 27-year-old elephant is sniffing around, very curious.

There is a clear grassy area of about 50m right around the boma.

She is still very nervous and officials will be staying with her throughout the night.

Lions have been in the area as recently as Friday evening and made a kill about 2km away.
