Taipei - Tens of thousands of people took part in anti-nuclear protests in Taiwan on Saturday to urge the government to phase out nuclear power, state-run Central News Agency reported.

Marches in three major cities drew activists from 96 anti-nuclear groups, which organised the events to mark the fourth anniversary of the Fukushima nuclear disaster in Japan, the agency said.

In Taipei the march took the form of a funeral to "bid farewell to nuclear power." According to organisers, more than 30 000 protesters took part.

Taiwan has three nuclear plants that generate 18% of the country's power, according to state-run Taiwan Power Comoany (Taipower).

After the Fukushima disaster, the government last year halted construction of a fourth plant, which was due to open in 2015.

"We people living on the north coast will have no place to go once earthquake-caused tsunamis devastate power plants," Kuo Ching-lin, an anti-nuclear activist from the north coast, where two nuclear plants are based, said in a statement.

Demonstrators also denounced government plans to ship radioactive waste abroad. It is offering 11.3 billion Taiwan dollars (about $360m) for the processing of 1 200 spent fuel rods.

In the southern cities of Tainan and Kaohsiung more than 10 000 people took part in similar protests.
