WITH over 60 rhinos killed in KwaZulu-Natal this year, another two rhinos were poached and killed on two separate reserves on Sunday night.

One rhino, belonging to Mahathunzi Premier Hinterland Development in Cramond, just outside Pietermaritzburg, was found dead on the property early yesterday morning.

Hawks detective Warrant Officer van Rooyen confirmed the poaching of the rhino yesterday at Mahathunzi.

“We can confirm that a white rhino cow was poached and the front horn had been removed,” he said.

“No arrests have been made and investigations are ongoing.”

The owner of Mahathunzi, who would not be named, said it was a sensitive matter and a serious crime and was being investigated by experts.

Ezemvelo Wildlife spokesperson Musa Mntambo said he had had confirmation that another rhino had been poached on HH private game farm near Hluhluwe on Sunday night and was found yesterday morning.

“There have been 63 rhinos that have been killed in KwaZulu-Natal this year so far,” said Mntambo.

“We are doing all we can do. Sixty-one arrests have been made, which is higher than last year and we have already seen a number of convictions,” he added.

Should anyone have any information on the case, contact Detective Warrant Officer van Rooyen at 082 376 2499.
