Cape Town – Scientists have excavated the grave of a suspected vampire in Northern Poland.

The mummy dates back to the late 16th century and was found underneath a local market in the Pomeranian Province.

There were a number of distinctive and alarming features around the grave that indicated the person’s lair was 'vampiric'.

According to a report on the the IB Times, the body was found with its front teeth (or fangs) gone, and a piece of stone was placed in the corpse's mouth.

His legs had been staked, supposedly to ensure that the person would not rise from the burial site.

According to Slawomir Gorka, a researcher on the site the staked legs and the stone in the mouth indicate that the rituals were done for the community, to place people’s minds at ease.

Gorka said that the burial site was extremely close to the town’s church.

The researchers at first believed that the person suffered a leg wound, but closer examination showed that the wound was made deliberately.
