Cape Town - A local application designed to help users spot game in the Kruger National Park has been re-launched for the continent of Africa.

Kruger: Live which allowed visitors to the national game park to spot and report sightings of animals, has been re-launched as Africa: Live.

"We've been blown away by the demand, not just by people going to the park and wanting to find out what other safari-goers had seen nearby, but even more so by the people who were 'watching' the map online and enjoying sightings through other people's eyes," said Rob Maclean, managing director of Satpack Travel, the firm that built the app.

The updated app expands the number of animals that can be identified, but the developers will continue to hide sighting reports of animals targeted by poachers such as rhino.

Users though, can report suspicious activity which can be used to alert the authorities that poachers may be in an area.

The platform serves to inform scientists at the Endangered Wildlife Trust and University of Cape Town to track and map the movements of animals in their habitat.

"The app and map are not just about helping people get a bit more out of their safari. They are about enabling safari-goers to share their experiences with the rest of the world as they happen and all the time show-casing Africa. Importantly, it also serves as a very valuable data-generation tool for conservation and research," said Maclean.

If users cannot identify animals in the bush, they can post the images to the company's Facebook page where people will try and answer questions or make identifications.

There is also a new marine mammal category included in Africa: Live.

The free app is available for Android-powered devices on Google's Play Store as well Apple devices on the AppStore. There is also a mobile-friendly website that serves other devices.
