Rio 2016 organisers do U-turn on aircon

Rio de Janeiro - Throw away the floor fans.

Rio de Janeiro Olympic organisers have changed their minds and say athletes will have free air conditioning in their bedrooms at the athletes' village.

The decision to provide complimentary air conditioning comes after The Associated Press reported this week that about 10 000 Olympic athletes would have to pay for it because of budget cuts.

Spokesperson Mario Andrada said on Friday a solution had been found to "allow us to have air conditioning. So we're buying air conditioning for all the athletes".

Rio organisers are making severe cuts to try to balance their operating budget of $1.9bn. Andrada says they are cutting "fat" that could reach $520m, which is almost 30% of the operating budget.
