Mexico City - A strong 6.2 magnitude earthquake struck off Mexico's Pacific coast on Tuesday, slightly shaking towns, but no immediate damage was reported, authorities said.

The quake struck at 10:51 GMT in the ocean 105km southwest of the tourist resort of Manzanillo, and 641km west of Mexico City, the US Geological Survey reported.

That quake was followed by a smaller 5.4 magnitude earthquake just nine kilometres away and along the same fault line minutes later, at 10:58 GMT.

The epicentre of the second earthquake was 96km southwest of Manzanillo, the USGS said.

Luis Felipe Puente, Mexico's national civil protection coordinator, said on Twitter that authorities in western Jalisco state reported that the earthquake was "slightly felt in the region of Huerta and Cihuatlan, without damage for the moment."

Officials in neighbouring Colima state also did not report damage after checking the region, said Ricardo de la Cruz, director general of national civil protection.
