A KwaZulu-Natal ANC councillor was killed and his wife was critically injured when their car was shot at in KwaNongoma on Monday morning.

Thami Nyembe was ambushed along Maphophoma road in Masundwini around 08:00, while driving his wife to town, ANC provincial secretary Super Zuma said. Both were taken to a nearby hospital. Nyembe was declared dead on arrival. His wife was in a critical condition.

Zuma said party members in the region were devastated by Nyembe's death. He called for police not to rest until they found the perpetrators.

"This is a tragic loss for his family, for the ANC, the people of KwaNongoma and KwaZulu-Natal in general," Zuma said.

Four weeks ago, eThekwini ANC councillor, Zodwa Sibiya, was shot and killed at the Glebelands Hostel in Umlazi, Durban.
