IT’S no secret that pastors’ children are under constant pressure and scrutiny. They are expected to be perfect and behave in a way that reflects their parents’ status as spiritual and moral leaders.

1. SIMPHIWE NGEMA

The actress and Isiko presenter is the daughter of Given Ngema. He is the founder of Christ Is Lord Church in Zuurberkom in Gauteng. She tells Move! that her parents never denied her the right to follow a career in the entertainment industry. “I have good and understanding parents. It wasn’t that difficult and there wasn’t much that I was required to change about myself,” she says. “With the kind of support I have back home, I was given the freedom to make my own choices. My parents always emphasised that being a Christian is merely from the heart and my acting career is a calling. This is why I love them. They are not old school.”

2.  BUSISIWE THWALA

Before the public knew her as Cici, 999’s latest singing sensation was known in KwaZulu-Natal as Busisiwe Thwala. Her father, Thomas Thwala, was a pastor at Saint Church in Ladysmith before he passed away in 2006. “Coming from a Christian family does not protect you from temptations. It is the morals that you were raised with that help you make the right decisions. People make a mistake of judging me by the way I dress but they do not know that deep down inside of me I know who I am in Christ,” says Cici.

The Idols winner says growing up a preacher’s son put him under pressure to be well-behaved. His father, Bhekithemba Mthethwa, is the head pastor at the Umlazi Oasis Fellowship in Durban. “Being a pastor’s kid is a huge blessing to me. There is a Bible verse (Luke 12:48) that says: ‘To whom much is given, much is required’ and with the huge blessing of being a pastor’s kid comes the responsibility to behave in the right way,” he says, adding, “I have lived under the cloud of being the pastor’s kid all my life.”

4. DJ C’NDO

Raised by a dad who used to be a preacher at the Lutheran Church in Mandeni, KwaZulu-Natal, DJ C’ndo says her parents were not impressed with her decision to pursue a career in entertainment. “Their assumption was that I was going to be wayward and abandon my studies. We sat down and talked about it. I decided to first complete my environmental health degree, which made them proud.” It was only after completing her studies that her parents felt free to support her career choice.

5. PHINDILE GWALA

Muvhango actress Phindile Gwala’s dad, Reverend Gamalenkosi Gwala, ministers at the Pentecostal Holiness Church in Eshowe, KZN. “My father played a role of a spiritual father perfectly, as a result he knows I will make good choices based on the foundation he gave me,” says Phindile.
