Foreign Fear

This week on the streets of Durban’s CBD, police battled to control looters as they forced their way into foreign-owned shops before setting them ablaze. Five people lost their lives - among them a 14 year old boy – and thousands more were displaced to makeshift refugee camps. Carte Blanche investigates the deeper issues that underpin this recurring violence.

The lure of ISIS

Last week a 15-year-old South African girl narrowly escaped ISIS recruitment. She is one of many Western teenagers lured to Syria through the group’s powerful online propaganda machine.  Experts say ISIS has especially ramped up its efforts to lure young women. Could terror groups be trying to recruit South African children through social media? Carte Blanche investigates.

Home Schooling

Over 60 000 South African learners do not attend formal schooling. Their parents have opted to take their education into their own hands and school them at home. But, from primary to high school, is this increasingly popular trend a viable alternative to traditional forms of education? Carte Blanche weighs up the pros and cons of home schooling.
