The Department of Correctional Services was in the process of installing equipment that will crack down on illegal cellphone use in prisons, Minister of Justice and Correctional Services Michael Masutha said on Tuesday.

Masutha said victims of crime were being called from jail, and witnesses were being intimidated.

Cellphones were also being used to engage in crimes from behind bars. "Therefore, we cannot have facilities where cellphones are being utilised," he said.

The equipment was being installed in Pollsmoor in Cape Town, Kgoshi Mampuru in Pretoria, and other prisons, and could detect a cellphone within a five-metre radius. The health department had also given the department the go ahead to start non-invasive body scanners to help with prisoner searches.
