There are very few things more precious than a new baby, a tiny human being completely dependent on mom and dad with a smile that could melt icebergs. But not everyone has what it takes to be a parent. The struggle of single moms has become the norm in South Africa, so much so that we aren’t even shocked when this sad reality sneaks into soap-land and our favourite TV characters join our plight.

There are very few things more precious than a new baby, a tiny human being

completely dependent on mom and dad with a smile that could melt icebergs. But not everyone has what it takes to be a parent. The struggle of single moms has become

the norm in South Africa, so much so that we aren’t even shocked when

this sad reality sneaks into soap-land and our favourite TV characters join

our plight.

We all know Suffocate and Puleng (on Rhythm City) were meant to be together. She has the gentle strength it takes to balance him. But he also likes Niki, who is just as hardcore as he is and has the drive to match his ambition. Secretly we wish she’d win his heart, especially with a baby on

the way.

The timing couldn’t have been worse: just when Suffocate and Puleng started getting their romance

back together, Suffocate realises he is going to be a father. Wanting his bread buttered on both

sides, he agrees to pay the bills for a very desperate Niki if she keeps the baby’s paternity a secret.

Trying to make a living and get ready to support her baby, Niki accepts a job from Puleng, who has no idea that Niki is pregnant, least of all with her boyfriend’s child.

Muvhango’s Albert is also making up for the time he lost with his son Sanele, now called Gundo.

After almost 20 years of not even knowing who his father was, Sanele and his mother struggled to make ends meet. His father was unaware of his son’s existence. This was until Albert’s son and his daughter fell in love. Now that the crisis has been averted, Albert is putting in overtimeto build a relationship with the son he

never knew he had.

Just as stubborn as his dad, Gundo keeps Albert on his toes, especially now that he is on Vuyiswa’s radar.

The single responsible dad might be hard to find, but he does exist. James (on Muvhango) struggles to raise a teen daughter who is just as headstrong as her jet-setting mom. In fact, James has fought to be part of his daughter’s life and eventually becoming a single dad, while mom Doobsie does business in Japan
