There were no tears at Livingstone Primary School in Morningside, Durban, as Grade 1s made their way to their classrooms hand in hand with their parents on Wednesday morning.

Excited parents were unpacking their children’s stationery and getting their little ones settled in at the short-term remedial school.

Paula MacDonald, 36, sat on a small chair reserved for her son, Joseph, 6, while she unpacked his stationery.

"I am very excited for him, it is going to be a great year for him," said the Cowies Hill mother.

Joseph is her first child to attend Grade 1.

"He didn’t sleep. He woke up very early because he was so excited," she said.
