Tributes have been pouring in for the man behind the music that united a nation, Mandoza, who passed away on Sunday.

Mandoza’s hit Nkalakatha knew no colour as the track crossed racial lines at a time in South Africa had just only adopted its new democracy.

We compiled a few facts you probably didn’t know about the Kwaito legend:

Mandoza has been in the entertainment industry for 17 years and has released 15 albums dating from 1999 to 2013.

The kwaito star was discovered by 999 boss Arthur Mafokate.

During a Jacaranda FM interview, Arthur said:

“They came to me as dancers but they told me they were also performing artists, so I made time to listen to them than I called them to the studio, when we got there Mandoza wasn’t even a lead vocalist but I chose him”

In 2005, Mandoza got his first acting role as Mzi on the rugby-themed movie, Number 10 alongside Colin Moss.

Former Proteas captain Shaun Pollock played Nkalakatha as his theme track when he took to the field of play.
