A Cape Town father has been left in shock after finding out that his 5-year-old daughter had been allegedly raped at her school by older boys - and the school had failed to immediately notify him.

The Grade R was allegedly attacked by the three Grade 2 boys on the grounds of their Mitchells Plain school, the Cape Argus reported.

The incident happened when the girl was waiting for her transport home. The boys ordered the girl to hold onto a tree while they “did what they wanted to do”.

She told a teacher about the alleged rape, reports the newspaper, but didn’t tell her parents. It was more than a week before they found out what had happened to their child.

Now the little girl is too scared to go back to the school and wants to be transferred, her father says.

The Western Cape Education Department said it is investigating the incident.

The article comes a day after a report about a 5-year-old boy who was allegedly raped by his 12-year-old cousin. The boy and his female cousin share a mattress on a floor in an informal settlement near Durban.

Childline manager Joan van Niekerk told the Times it was common for children to observe and copy adults until they reach maturity, when they would know what was acceptable and what was inappropriate.

Forty-five percent of rapes reported to South African police are child rapes, and 50% of South Africa’s children will be abused before the age of 18, according to the Tears Foundation and the Medical Research Council.
