Anonymous from Brits writes:

I am a 30-year-old married woman with four children. I would like to be sterilised so that I do not have any more children. I would like to know if I am required by law to get permission from my husband before I can get sterilised.

Ausi Nthabi responds:

In terms of the law, a woman has the right to decide if she wants to be sterilised and this

is a decision that must be made by her alone, even when she is married. The consent of the husband is not needed. The only exception is a girl child who is under the age of 18. No girl, who is under the age of 18, can legally consent to being sterilised. Once a decision has been made to get sterilised, you must consult a doctor who will advice you on the health
