A man has been arrested after he broke into a house in Wesbank, Mfuleni, and raped the occupant before fleeing with stolen items.

The man gained entry into the house in the early hours of Wednesday morning and forced the victim to open the front door, Lieutenant-Colonel Andre Traut said.

After fleeing with household goods, quick-acting police tracked him down and arrested him minutes later after finding the stolen goods in his possession.

The suspect was due to appear in the Blue Downs Magistrate's Court on charges of rape and house robbery, Traut added.

In June, Cape Town police warned residents of the city's townships to be on the lookout for house robbers with a specific modus operandi, CityVision reported.

"In most cases reported, suspects were pretending to be selling or enquiring about something," Lieutenant Siyabulela Vukubi said.

They would then produce a firearm and rob the occupants of their personal belongings and household items. The suspected mastermind behind these robberies has been identified, he said.

In July, a South African extreme swimmer was also the victim of a house robbery at his Constantia home where he was held at gun and knife point on a Saturday morning, News24 reported.

The robbers reportedly locked him in his bedroom while they ransacked his home, and even told him to "have a nice day", before leaving his property.
