How can one find out whether the product being used is safe?

Unfortunately, South Africa does not have a list of names of products that are dangerous for the consumer. Only the substances listed above (hydroquinone, mercury, phenol and steroids) are listed under banned substances. Many dangerous creams containing these banned substances are brought into the country illegally and the ingredients are not listed on the labels. These products are not only found on the streets but also in shops and pharmacies. Many people believe if they buy a product in a shop or pharmacy it means it is a good, safe product. That’s not always the case. Research is being conducted into some products and, hopefully, a list of dangerous skin products will be compiled.
