How to take care of your child's skin

Children have thinner and

more delicate skin, which

makes it more sensitive to

irritation. Taking care of

your child’s skin keeps it nourished

and helps prevent skin problems.

LOOKING AFTER THEIR SKIN

¦ Only use creams made for babies.

They should be fragrance-free to

avoid irritation.

¦ Monitor your baby’s diet.

¦ Protect them from the sun by

using age-appropriate sun creams.

¦ Make sure your children get used

to washing their hands properly

using soap. This fights bacteria which

can lead to viruses.

¦ If your child has a bruise, use ice to

reduce the swelling. Apply pressure if

there is bleeding.

¦ Never put heated pain relief on

your child as this can lead to skin

irritation.

¦ If your child has a burn, leave it

uncovered to allow air to reach the

affected area.

¦ Seek medical advice on the correct

treatment for ringworm.

IRRITANTS IN FRAGRANCES

Fragranced products may have

allergens and irritants which will

leave skin dry. Also, fragrance has no

added benefits and can also irritate

the skin below its surface.

OILS AND PLANT EXTRACTS

While some essential oils can relieve

skin irritation and rashes, there are

oils that can hurt the skin's healing

process. The same goes for plant

extracts such as citrus, peppermint,

menthol, eucalyptus and lavender.

They may be natural products, but

you must still use them with caution

and appropriately. Always seek

advice for serious skin conditions.

COLOURING AGENTS

As skincare experts warn, "A lot of

baby skin care products have a pretty

yellow or pink tint. This means the

product has colouring agents, which

can cause problems for sensitive

baby skin".

INGREDIENTS THAT ARE GOOD

FOR YOUR BABY

AVOCADO OIL

This natural ingredient is easily

absorbed into your baby’s skin. It also

contains key vitamins.

VITAMIN E

Works as a powerful antioxidant that

protects the skin from inflammation

and help to keep your baby’s skin

well hydrated.

GREEN TEA OIL

This is an excellent antioxidant for

the skin and it can prevent bacteria.
