21 October 2013

In another SA Idols innovation this week, the Top 7 Idols Season 9 contestants competed for the public’s votes at the Moreleta Auditorium in Pretoria tonight (Sunday, 20 October) with the help of the Idols Choir, put together especially for tonight’s show by Idols Musical Director RJ Benjamin.

The Top 7 took charge of the evening right away with a group performance of Katy Perry’s mega-hit, “Roar”, and then Durban schoolteacher CRYSTALENE NAIR (24) kicked off the competition with the Aretha Franklin standard “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman”. Gareth Cliff noted that Crystalene always seems to choose songs made famous by incredible divas. To vote for Crystalene, SMS the number 02 to 37400. The gentle giant from eMalahleni, MUSA SUKWENE (26), competed for votes with R&B superstar Anthony Hamilton’s “Pass Me Over”.  “That was a boring song, and your least interesting performance of the show so far,” a disgruntled Gareth complained. But Unathi said she thought it was a very powerful performance. “To vote for Musa, SMS the number 09 to 37400. BUNNY MAJAJA (26) from Florida Glen in Johannesburg went old school with the Beatles classic, “Let It Be”. “Good. We’re getting warmer – we’re starting to have fun,” Gareth said happily. To vote for Bunny, SMS the number 08 to 37400. [R1.50 per text] or vote online via mobile or web at mnet.co.za/idolssa, for free. Fans can also vote on Mxit [25 moola]. SONKE MAZIBUKO (21) from Soweto hoped to impress voters with his rendition of the Jimmy Cliff classic “Many Rivers To Cross”. “Again – a dreary, boring song,” Gareth complained. “Three out of the four songs I’ve heard tonight have been awful.” Unathi agreed that they were struggling with song choice this week. “But what you managed to do that the other three so far didn’t, was to lead the choir,” she pointed out. To vote for Sonke, SMS the number 06 to 37400. [R1.50 per text] or vote online via mobile or web at mnet.co.za/idolssa, for free. Fans can also vote on Mxit [25 moola]. BRENDEN LEDWABA (19) from Graskop in Mpumalanga put his unique charismatic spin on the Josh Groban standard “You Raise Me Up”. Gareth thought the contestants must have been advised “by a panel from the old-age home” on their song choices for tonight. To vote for Brenden, SMS the number 01 to 37400. The Eastern Cape’s golden girl CHRISTINA WILLIAMS (21) from Port Elizabeth selected Alicia Keys’ very first hit ever, “Fallin’”. “You’re a good pop singer but you’re not a soul singer,” Randall told Christina. He thought she over-reached in her performance, “because the song is unfortunately not you.” To vote for Christina, SMS the number 10 to 37400. [R1.50 per text] or vote online via mobile or web at mnet.co.za/idolssa, for free. Fans can also vote on Mxit [25 moola]. Follow Christina on Twitter @_c_williams

19-year-old ZOË ZANA from Bishop Lavis in Cape Town moved in behind the drum kit to close tonight’s show on an energetic note with the Jackson 5’s first big hit, “Can You Feel It?” Gareth thanked her. “My best performance of the night by kilometers.” “So many things could have gone wrong, but so many things went right!” Randall summarised. To vote for Zoë, SMS the number 05 to 37400. [R1.50 per text] or vote online via mobile or web at mnet.co.za/idolssa, for free. Fans can also vote on Mxit [25 moola]. Follow Zoë on Twitter @zoe_zana

Voting for the Top 7 will close on Monday night, 21 October, at 22:00. And on Tuesday, 22 October, fans will find out for which singer this will have been their last Idols Season 9 performance.

Idols SA is a co-production between M-Net and Mzansi Magic and comes your way twice a week: on Sundays at 17:30 and Tuesdays at 19:30.
