Revealing the dynamic and determined woman behind Isidingo’s Agnes Matabane.      Childhood

Where are you from?

I was born 40 years ago in Orlando East, Soweto. I now live in Douglasdale, Johannesburg.

How was your childhood? I’m the last-born of nine children. I was spoilt because I was the baby in the family. My parents juggled raising all of us very well. We were taken to the zoo and had picnics as a family.   Acting

When did you decide on acting?

As a child, I was interested in literature and took part in small dramas in the township. It was only later in life that I started acting.

What did you do before?

After completing high school in Soweto, I worked as a cinematographer (person responsible for the lighting and camera work for a film). I was attracted to acting and, in the 1980s; I worked for the City of Johannesburg as an Aids educator. I had a drama group that used to do dramas about HIV/Aids.

How did you land a part in Isidingo?

I studied dramatic arts at Wits University from 1990. After I finished my honours degree, I auditioned for Ma Agnes’ role and got it. I’m part of the first cast of Isidingo.
