A police officer has shot and killed a man who stabbed him in the head with a screwdriver after he tried to break up a fight in Knysna, Western Cape police said on Tuesday.

The man turned on the officer and began stabbing him. The officer then shot him. The attacker later died from the gunshot wound, Lieutenant Colonel Norman Joseph said.

The 41-year-old sergeant, attached to the Tsitsikamma dog unit, responded to a report of two men fighting near a petrol station in Main Street on Monday morning. He separated the men.

"One of the two men then quarrelled with, and attacked, the police official with a screwdriver and stabbed him in the head. He further attempted to inflict multiple stab wounds on the member, even after the member fell to the ground."

The sergeant eventually drew his firearm and shot the man in the abdomen. Both men were rushed to hospital. The man with the screwdriver, whose identity was not yet known, died. The officer was later discharged. Joseph said a murder and attempted murder case would be investigated.
