ACTRESS, Lorraine Mphephi, who

plays Pam on Isibaya, says acting has

always given her joy. Being raised by

her grandmother while her mother

was working as a domestic worker,

Lorraine says they were very supportive of her

decision to venture into the entertainment

industry while she was still in high school. But

they also wanted her to complete her studies.

THE IMPACT OF MOTHERHOOD

Lorraine says her grandmother taught her to be

a responsible person.

“I have 12-year-old twin daughters who mean

a lot to me. Being a mother has been a great

experience and it has taught me a lot of lessons.

I am no longer involved with the father of my

kids, whom I don’t want to talk about,” she says.

Lorraine says it wasn’t really that hard to raise

her children alone and that like

her daughters, her father was also

absent in her life.

“I don’t want to dwell too much

on my father, he was not there and

that’s the end of the story. People

should not give up on raising their

children alone. There is always

support and hope in any situation.”

HER BIG BREAK

Lorraine, who grew up in

Soweto, always wanted to be an

entertainer. She explains to Move!

that she was in her teens when she

starred in the drama series, Yizo Yizo, which was

her big break.

“I portrayed the character of Mantwa on

Yizo Yizo and it was one of the most amazing

experiences. But it was a little difficult for me

because I was still in high school and my family

wanted me to complete school because there

were no guarantees of where my career might

end up. I am thankful for their guidance.”

She then completed her schooling, but when

Yizo Yizo ended, her career went quiet.

“I didn’t put myself down after that. I went to

do short courses in the beauty

industry, while I was waiting

for something to come along.

And then Isibaya came along. I

am happy where I am now and I

am not planning on leaving the

Isibaya cast anytime soon,” says

the former Muvhango actress.

WORKING WITH HER FRIEND

She says she is grateful to work with one of her

best friends Zakhele Mabasa, who plays the

character of Skhaleni on Isibaya, adding that she

doesn’t see herself working without him on the

soapie set.

“I remember meeting Zakhele when we were

still on Yizo Yizo and that’s where we became

best friends. He taught me a lot about the

entertainment industry and on improving

myself. I know that a lot of people find

him funny, but in real life, Zakhele is a real

gentleman,” she says
