Make a great impression at your first job

If you’re starting a new job, there are many things that you can do to earn respect and credibility and ensure that you do more than simply survive your first year. The 1Life team spoke to Shelagh Foster, author of Your First Year At Work: A Survival Guide, to find out what you need to do.

To stand out from the crowd from your first day of work, Shelagh says you need to make a conscious decision to do the following:

Be polite and respectful

In an ideal world, respect should be earned, but the workplace is often not an ideal world. It’s a tough place with its own rules – and one of those rules is that if you are younger or less experienced, you should automatically show respect to your elders and betters. And of course, it’s a good idea to be polite to everyone that you encounter.
