FORMER Gospel Gold host, Palesa Madisakwane, who has a 21-year-old daughter, Bahumi Madisakwane with Idols judge Somizi Mhlongo, may be out of the limelight lately, but her daughter is making waves in the industry. The 40-year-old former Generations actress says she may be out of sight, but in reality, acting was always a hobby for her as she is a business woman first. Nowadays, she is following in her parents’ footsteps and working in construction. Bahumi tells Move! she has her heart set on becoming the best presenter and actress the country has ever wished for.

CO-PARENTING WITH SOMIZI

Bahumi says she will not let the industry dictate to her. She is confident that her faith in God will see her through because she and her mother have each other’s back no matter what the industry throws at them. While many may still frown upon the fact that Palesa and “SomGAGA”, who is openly gay, have a child together, Palesa says she is not bothered by people who judge her for it. Instead, she laughs it off. “Somizi and I were young when we fell pregnant and had our daughter. We were in each other’s lives, but we had no plans for the future. Now that Bahumi is an adult and most people know who her parents are, we never once thought of hiding it from the media. People will always talk and sometimes be convinced that they know you, but they actually don’t. When it comes to raising Bahumi, we try our best to give her a normal life even though it’s hard to avoid bad publicity,”

says Palesa, who used to own a bridal boutique in Sandton.

ONE BLESSED CHILD

And Bahumi concurs. “I am a very opinionated person, but my mom has taught me to hold back a bit whenever I wanted to hit back with a comment at someone trying to disrespect us on social media.I have kept a circle of friends from my childhood, so I hardly have to explain myself to anyone whenever there’s bad publicity about my parents,” says Bahumi,

who was one of the semi-finalists in 2015 in a talent search for DStv’s TLC channel. Palesa goes on to say that Bahumi is one blessed child for having two fathers because her exhusband Jakes Mocuminyane is also a father figure in her life. She adds that they have

a special bond and relate to each other in their own special way. “I call my step-father dad simply because that is who he is to me. We still see each other a lot and he kind of knows my whereabouts at all times,” says Bahumi, who is a studying BCom law at Varsity College.

Palesa, who was born in Soweto, says, “Because Jakes was in Bahumi’s life since birth it was inevitable that they have become so close even till now.”

ON SINGLE PARENTING

The former Ashes to Ashes star, who has two other children from her previous marriage to Jakes, tells Move! that bad publicity has taken its toll on her as a single mother who is raising youngsters, Khumo (12) and Mohumi (6). “When lies are written about me the first thing I think about are my kids and having to explain myself to them. But luckily now that Bahumi is older, she understands and she has become my confidant,” says the Soweto-born presenter. She has had her fair share of ups and downs in the industry but there have been more highs than lows. “I’ve come to a point where I am also not bothered about negative things written about my mother because I know her better than anyone,” exclaims Bahumi. “I wish reporters would learn to focus more on the positive stories

than negative ones because it takes a lot for my parents to put themselves out there only to be disrespected by people they have never met.”

FINDING LOVE AGAIN

Bahumi goes on to say how she thinks her mother is “cool” and hopes she finds love,

but she will have to interrogate that man before he dates her mother. “I am single and ready to mingle, it’s about time I find myself a good man. Bahumi has my back on this one. She insists on having a serious chat with the guy I’ll bring home. But I understand

where she comes from. As a mother I also wish her well when its comes to love, but I will never be ready for her to have a boyfriend,” she says
