Businessman Tito Mboweni recently tweeted that he got duped out of R5 000 at an ATM situated at a petrol station on the M1 in Midrand.

He also tweeted that there was a smartly dressed gentleman who is very helpful at the ATM.

With it being the festive season members of the public are urged to be very vigilant at ATMs.

Here are five safety tips from the Banking Association South Africa you should follow this festive:

  • Never give your card to someone at an ATM for any reason.

  • Never let anyone assist you at an ATM, even if they appear to be a bank official or security personnel.

  • Beware of people standing close to you when you are concluding transactions at an ATM.

  • Ensure you hide your pin when keying it into an ATM.

  • Never use an ATM that looks tampered with or damaged.
