Reeva Steenkamp's family say they will commemorate what would have been her 30th birthday on Monday privately, and will not attend or follow Oscar Pistorius's court appearance.

"Because it is her day, we want to remember her and commemorate her birthday - quietly and privately," her uncle, Michael Steenkamp, told Die Burger.

He and his wife were with Reeva's parents, Barry and June Steenkamp, at a family gathering in Port Elizabeth.

"Maybe we will do something small, like bake a cake," Michael Steenkamp said.

Pistorius was charged with murdering Reeva Steenkamp in his Pretoria home on 14 February. He is set to appear in the Pretoria Magistrate's Court on Monday to be served with an indictment, ahead of a trial which is expected to start early in 2014.

Die Burger reported on Monday that members of the Pistorius family closed ranks around the paralympic athlete on Sunday, with his uncle, Arnold Pistorius, referring all media requests to a family spokesperson.
