Step by step: How to cook pasta the right way

1. Fill a large pot three-quarter full with water. Add salt and a little oil (the oil prevents the pasta from sticking together) and stir. Bring to the boil.

2. When the water is boiling fast, add the pasta and stir with a wooden spoon while the water comes back to the boil. Cook the pasta for about 12 to 15 minutes or until it is soft, but still firm, when you bite into it.

3. When the pasta is cooked, remove from the heat and drain in a colander (see picture) or a sieve. If you don’t have a colander or sieve, use the lid of the saucepan to prevent the pasta from falling out while you drain the water.

4. If you are not adding the sauce immediately, add a little oil to the pasta to prevent it from sticking together, and mix lightly with two forks.
