Steps to a healthy mind

Physical health and fitness is essential, but we sometimes forget how important it is to have a healthy mind. A healthy mind is essential to lifelong happiness and success.

How to have a healthy mind:

1. Focus on the future

Every choice we have made up until now has brought us to where we are today. If you are not happy about where you are, look to the future and ask yourself where you would like to be in five, 10 and 20 years’ time.

A practical way to do this is to create a life vision. In a journal, write down what you want to experience, achieve, do, and most importantly who you want to become.

If you are more of a visual person, create an inspiration board – a collection of pictures of your desired future. A life vision makes you focus on what you need to do in the present to live the life of your dreams in the future.

2. Learn from the past, then let go

Looking back, there are things I wish I hadn’t done or said. These choices hurt people and myself. Making mistakes is a part of life. The important thing is that we learn from them and move on.

Use those life lessons to help yourself and others. Move forward by forgiving yourself and knowing you’re now equipped to make better choices.

3. Be present

Enjoy the moment and make the most of it. It’s important to focus on what you want to achieve in the future, but not so much that you forget to enjoy the present. The present has so much to offer - people, places and experiences that you may miss if are always looking forward.

Look around you and appreciate all that you have. Even if you’re not where you want to be, the fact that you are alive is something for which to be grateful. There's an old African saying, “When you are thankful for a little, you will find a lot.”
