A driver at the wheel of a fully-laden minibus taxi was allegedly 13 times over the legal limit when tested for alcohol on Saturday, the Road Traffic Inspectorate said.

Spokesperson Zinhle Mngomezulu said the driver was conveying passengers on the N2 from Empangeni to Durban when he was stopped and his breath was tested by RTI officials in the Tongaat area on Saturday afternoon.

It is alleged he had a breath alcohol content of 1.30 mg per 1 000 ml of breath. The legal limit for taxi drivers is 0.10 mg per 1 000 ml of breath.

“He was arrested at the scene and the officers made arrangements with the owner of the taxi to get a sober driver to take over. The taxi was kept safe by RTI officials,” said Mngomezulu.

She said the driver was taken to Stanger police station, where he was charged and held for four hours to sober up, as is routine.

He was thereafter released on bail of R2 500 pending his court appearance in Stanger on Monday.
