The voice of the voiceless by Calvin Dludla

The Voice of the Voiceless is a campaign aimed at educating and empowering the youth of Newcastle particularly Osizweni township with information to those who harbor an ambition to know and work in the media industry in future.

Statement of the problem

The ever increasing rate of crime, unemployment of our youth, and the addiction of our youth to trending drugs like nyaope has hit our town like a tsunami. Our youth are roaming around the streets hopeless, with nowhere to go end and they end up going for desperate measures like crime.

Not that they are lazy, or they don’t want to see themselves shining or improving their lives one day, but it’s because they are not being presented a platform with opportunities to fulfill their goals and make the town and the province proud.

Newcastle has produced many household names in sports and entertainment such as: Helman Mkhalele, Siyabonga Nkosi, Simphiwe Mthethwa, Fani Madida Peggy Sue Khumalo and Zandile Masondo to name just a few.

The town is also the birthplace of many unsung heroes working in the media industry. But with the high rate of pregnancy and young people opting to spend their time in local taverns will not help the town go forward.

I have seen young people who have finished matric with flying colors and they don’t know where to go to further their studies, they don’t know who to consult because opportunities in a remote area like Newcastle barely avail themselves. Now our beautiful town of Newcastle has been plagued by criminal groups like Amaroto and others, which leaves us with irresponsible youth, who are the future.

As a resident of Newcastle, I know very well the challenges that these young people face. Coming from a remote area like Newcastle, many of them are deprived of so many opportunities. For example some struggle to further their studies due to their limited access to information, which may be helpful to them to acquire information needed to study at Universities and Technikons'.

The objective and the Goal of this campaign

The objectives of this campaign is to create a platform for the members of the community, specifically those in grade 11 and 12, to be informed about how the media works and how it operates, on different levels. Newcastle has aspiring radio presenters and news readers but the problem is that there is no platform for them to know more about their future careers.

The major objective is to bring to them institutions that will be helpful in terms of making sure that they know about the media, be it on radio, print or television and how they can get opportunities.

Management Plan

In this project I have roped in media groups like: 1KZNTV, Newcastle Advertiser, Newcastle Community Radio, and media personalities from Igagasi FM, and East Coast Radio

Also, I have roped in Higher Learning Institutions like Amajuba Technical College, Unisa and Journalism and Media Studies lectures from UKZN. Also there are institutions like NSFAS, Icasa and The Press Ombudsman.

All the above-mentioned institutions will avail their resources and personnel, and they will engage with the audience and share their experiences and opportunities inside. I am planning to do this event towards the end of October 2015. The event will be held on the 24th of October 2015 in Newcastle, Osizweni
