On the ropes and desperate to escape jail time, controversial AbaThembu King Buyelekhaya Dalindyebo has turned to well-known, Joburg-based legal heavyweights to fight his case.

This comes after The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has reiterated its intention to put him behind bars “as soon as possible”.

NPA senior prosecutor Nigel Carpenter, who masterminded his conviction, filed a last-minute application to oppose an extension of bail for Dalindyebo.

And with the writing almost written on the wall and signs pointing the Thembu king to jail, he has enlisted the services of Etienne Naude and renowned legal mind Advocate Jaap Cilliers (SC) to fight for his freedom.

Dalindyebo is expected to serve 12 years in jail after his initial sentence of 15 years was reduced. He is charged with crimes committed in 1995 – including attempted murder, kidnapping and assault.
