Bloemfontein – Three people, including a 20-year-old woman, have been arrested in connection with the murder of a traffic officer in Standerton, Mpumalanga, police said on Saturday.

The 37-year-old officer was shot dead on Friday afternoon while attempting to issue a traffic violation fine in Standerton, Lt-Col Thandi Mbambo said.

The three were arrested on Friday evening while trying to enter Lesotho at the Maseru border post after a car fitting the description of those the killers had used was stopped and searched.

Police found a RAP 401 handgun with live ammunition and a traffic fine receipt book the three allegedly stole from the officer.

He said they would appear in the Ladybrand Magistrate's Court soon on charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, and theft of state property.

They would face an additional charge of murder once Standerton police had investigated the killing.
