Avon’s Light Up to Speak Out candle lighting ceremony is aimed at mobilising communities against gender based violence.

Avon will host the 4th annual Avon Light Up to Speak Out candle lighting ceremony in Soweto on Saturday, 4 July to mobilise the community against gender based violence as well as to raise funds for People Opposing Women Abuse (POWA). The event forms part of Avon’s continued commitment to reducing violence against women through public education and awareness aimed predominantly at men with the aim of changing their attitudes and behaviours towards this serious issue.

In South Africa, 1 in 4 women is in an abusive relationship. In addition a woman is killed every hours by her male intimate partner according to the Medical Research Council (MRC) while research also suggests that only 1 in 29 rape cases are reported. These horrifying statistics mean that immediate intervention is required. Avon has launched a series of campaigns which will be activated around key women’s events for example International Women’s Day in March, Women’s Month in August and 16 days of activism towards the end of the year.
