48951 Rapes a Year

31 January 2014, 17:18

Today I was listening to Radio702 and was listening to the conversation about the scourge of rape. To be honest I was disgusted and felt really angry about this problem. I think there is a huge problem and cannot for the life of me work out when this started, I also don’t know how long it’s been this bad and been unreported.

As things stand I will admit that I think that 48951 is probably conservative and it’s probably much higher. With election season in full swing Redi Thlabi said that leaders campaigning should also take this opportunity to speak out against this. Instinctively I tweeted “The irony of Jacob Zuma leading such a campaign” Well something along those lines...

Redi and some fellow tweetsters quickly corrected us who made such suggestions that he had been acquitted and as such we can’t go about making such accusations. This got me to thinking a few things

Radio702\LeadSA say that 48951 rapes were reported and every 4 minutes they ring a bell to indicate that every 4 minutes in this country a woman gets raped. Now unless there were 48951 convictions in the last year this is surely alarmist to stage such a campaign.

I am not about to start doubting people when they say they have been raped, it would be crass to make light of such but as a responsible media house I would like to suggest we then don’t put out such a message about us.

I am not sure how it’s convenient to make such a huge oversight when you seem to be able to differentiate between an accusation, conviction and acquittal. I am not sure that for example JZ having had been acquitted means that nothing happened. We all know how fantastic our justice system is and when someone perhaps ducks a few hundred corruption charges, has friend’s who slip out of jail on sick parole and sidesteps rape charges the woman was incorrect.

It’s a bit confusing to now say because a court of law says you were not raped you were not raped. A woman called and then spoke about how a guy said to her “If you don’t consent I am going to rape you.” She said “Ok, as long as you use a condom”

Technically you can argue there was consent hence throw out rape but we can all see how that would be rape. I don’t use this to sling mud a President Jacob Zuma no; I am just saying we must be consistent in pronouncements we make

IT’S IRRESPONSIBLE TO STATE THAT EVERY FOUR MINUTES A WOMAN IS RAPED IN SA. I am not defending this nonsense either, I am saying the problem is much bigger than us then getting pedantic and saying he was acquitted. I know that sometimes people are falsely accused but that is miniscule compared to those who do get raped, we also know how often people get away with crime.

We can’t say the same legal system that fails so many of us all the time is now to be implicitly trusted when pronouncing on a matter as private and secretive as rape. That’s all
