A Dyslexic view

21 April 2014, 18:31

Funny, I did not think I would be writing my second article so shortly after the first.  This one will be full of spelling errors and bad grammar, just like the last one. Even with spellcheck and all the other wonderful gifts of Windows Word I will still make numerous mistakes.

I will proof read this article until I can see no errors, unfortunately there will still be some.

The comments on my last submission to news 24 prompted me to write this. It would appear that my lack of ability in the written word has left me open to criticism from some of the news 24 community.

I also appreciate that writing is how we, as the news 24 community, communicate and that reading what I right can be difficult.  Although those that criticise my lack of writing ability seem to find it amusing.

Let me tell you about my disability. I have a condition known as Minimum Brain Dysfunction.

It is not a Dyslexia but presents in the same way. The last time my spelling and reading ages where tested was for university. My spelling age was that of a grade 4 student and my reading age was that of a grade 5 student.

The test where carried out some twenty years ago, so hopefully things have improved.  I have also recently been diagnosed with adult ADD. Believe me, ADD is not a fallacy and Ritalin really does help.

As a child I went through some excellent schools, one of which was remedial.  The teachers I had where, for the most part, excellent. They taught me to work around my disability. They also taught me to think.

Not what to think but how to think. It is, in a large part, thanks to them that I feel confident enough to expose my writing to the public.

Coming back to my last submission on news 24, I was amazed at how vindictive some of the comments regarding my spelling and grammar where.  The protagonists seemed to think that I could wave the magic spell check wand over my work and all would be corrected.  I wish it was so.

What they do not seem to understand is that spelling and reading go hand in hand. When spellcheck underlines a word and I right click on the word, I am presented with a selection of words to choose from. The trick is picking the right word.  This, thanks to my difficultly reading, I do not always get correct.

For those members of the News 24 community who feel the need to criticizes other members spelling and grammar.

Don’t. It’s offensive. Just like having a go at someone because of any other disability. If you wish to enter into a debate with me regarding my disability please feel free.

If any of you have children with learning disabilities support them love them and let them know they can achieve what every they want despite their problems.
