"Man is the only animal that laughs and weeps, for he is the only animal that is struck with the difference between what things are, and what they might have been."
– William Hazlitt
While News24 can give you the impression that atheism comprises of a bunch of reading 20-somethingers, a few grouchy old wizards, and a bunch of book-selling, argumentative scientists who lead the movement, occasionally, a civilized atheist has to sound the horn and remind audiences (yes audiences, for this whole debate has become a spectacle) that not everyone falls neatly into a stereotype.
For some people the line of reason is but an elastic band meant to be stretched whenever occasion permits. There is a desperate need in many modern atheistic camps to usurp the intellectual and moral characteristics of our specie as if they and they alone could possess these traits.
I have a perspective that few militant atheist ever will enjoy in that I live in the only country in the world that has achieved sectarian utopia while retaining the deep-seated religious affiliations that one can never truly dispense with in a multicultural society. Not once has anyone of any religion or denomination tried to affect my life in Singapore with their religious convictions, nor has anyone tried to recruit me to their cause or dictate to me their tenets of moral and spiritual conduct. Religion here is an decorative accessory to society, not a power play for, if you will pardon the pun, anyone’s soul.
Even politics here is washed clean of religious meddling. Nobody is pushing any ‘moral’ or ‘cultural’ agenda. The focus is on economic grown and social adhesion. There are no Malemas here telling anyone to pack up and go back to Europe; this is one of the many gifts of living in a country that does not have freedom of speech!
Back to the point, I’ve heard enough of the loud-mouthed puppets of British and American atheism and their incessant convulsion at any and all things religious. The idea of civilization collapsing if religion is not completely eradicated in every nook of society is a fabricated emergency created and driven by commercial and political interests. It stinks of the very inquisitorial conduct that militant atheist constantly stack as the pillars of their argument to separate religion from the human condition.
The fact that I feel pressured by the modern atheist movement to march to the courts and demand that all religious paraphernalia be removed from my sight suggest to me that I am, again, part of someone’s struggle for my mind. Someone is trying to attach strings to my limbs and animate me to their will. Never again!
I shudder to think what my lovely Singapore will be like if those extremist atheists were to gain a foothold here and exact their idea of a ‘civilized’ society. Phase one will be the drawing of fault lines around religious and cultural groups, and then phase two will proceed to quaking the ground so that a contiguous society built on peace, cooperation, and mutual respect fractures and breaks apart. The ensuing conflict will then form part of the doctoral thesis on religious violence and the falsely assumed asymmetry in cognitive abilities between believers and atheists.
Let me vanquish a blatant fabrication: Atheists are NOT the elite of the bell-curve of IQ. Most atheists are no more educated, intelligent, or moral than their religious counterparts. They may not believe in a man in the sky, but they are every bit as primitive, divisive, obstinate, violent, and politically conniving as the religious extremists they aim to supplant.
Many (if not most) of these modern militant atheists only forsook religion because it failed them at a vulnerable point in their lives. You will constantly hear most atheists bitterly recount how they suffered, how religion causes suffering, how they hate not even having been given a choice to be christian, or muslim, and how they lament the fact that they ever wasted time on religion. If your claim to higher intelligence comes from a bruised ego and an emotional scar you bear from your past convictions, then you are not worthy of being called Homo (man) Sapien (thinking).
I think this is one of the few things that religious people and myself can agree on; most atheist are pathetic, scarred little people who are going overboard to show their condition to a disinterested public.
A society run by a bunch of emotionally scarred atheists is hardly what I would consider a peaceful, advanced, and prosperous existence. Like the necrotic limb that rules South Africa, you will not let go of the struggles and revolutions once you finally get to occupy the seat of power. Militant atheism is a threat to society every bit as real and serious as the threat posed by muslim extremist who are willing to (and frequently do) shed limb and liver in an attempt to dictate subjugate all of civilization.
As I write this, some atheist troll is photoshopping the slogan ‘Where was your god then’ title on a picture of a starving African child. The dissemination of this sort of cranial rot is exactly what many atheists are against, but those reasonable atheists are drowned out by the masses of pitchfork-and-lantern-wielding lunatics who use their religiously scarred childhood and a false sense of superior intellect as a justification to land any blow, even a desperate, childish one on something or someone religious.
Atheism has finally grown to the point where a piece of it has to break off and float away from the mass. There is indeed a denominational age ahead for atheism, and I don’t know about the rest of you atheists who came to this position by the diligent application of your mental faculties, but I will not be lumped together in the same camp as these meme-swinging morons who are even worse than the average religious person.
I know that religion is not a mark of intelligence because there is a chasm of near-infinite width between the intellects of someone who says, I follow religion X because that is the best argument I’ve heard, and someone who says, religion is the only argument I want to hear. To be religious is not by default a sign of someone with cerebral difficulties. And the way most of you pseudo-intellectual atheists explain crucial scientific theories and supporting evidence for those theories would make even a genius look for a better explanation.
While I anticipate a comments box exploding with attacks on me, my supposed intellect, my education, etc., I sincerely hope that those of you who are reasonable atheist will not allow yourselves to be drowned out of the argument by these attention-seeking parasites who clearly are with us, but not of us.
You militant atheist will never rob me of the grand cathedrals, the inspiring temples, the easter bunny, or a decorated christmas tree because you have to have a fit over anything that can remotely be associated with religion. Grow up!
Society will never again collapse under religion. Like the apartheid regime, religion could not hold onto the reins of power even when it had all the power of a totalitarian system. The fight is over. All we need do now is stay the course.
Never in the history of atheism has it ever tried to rule by force and dictate to the common person how they may think and behave. One of the greatest joys atheistic debaters have, to be able to distance their stance from the violence, subjugation, and bloodshed that every religion is guilty of. I won’t stand by and silently watch as atheism, too, goes through a phase of extremism and violence, because then it truly will have earned the title of being ‘just another religion.’
I sincerely hope other civilized atheist will reflect on what I’ve written. Our numbers are sufficient to not need the support of punks, pseudo-intellectuals, and vindictive emotionally scarred escapees from one religion or another.
