A Question for Christians

08 May 2012, 11:55

This is a question for all Christians but mainly aimed at Young Earth Creationists. (Charlesdumbwin, Shaun etc)

It is not a “loaded” question, it is not based on theories or guesswork or maybes, but on 100% proven fact. Before I get to the question I would like to state the facts that the question is based on so there is no confusion and/or misinterpretations.

Speed of Light

This is the speed at which light travels (300 000km/s). It is accepted as a constant and is without doubt 100% fact. It is the time it takes for light to travel from point A to point B. For example light from our Sun takes 8min 32sec to reach Earth, so if you look at the Sun you are actually seeing it 8min 32sec in the past and not in “real” time.

Light Year

A light year is the distance light will travel in an Earth year. For example if an object is 100 light years away it means light from that object will take 100 years to reach Earth before we can see the object. When we see said object we are looking at it as it was 100 years ago not as it is today.

Andromeda Galaxy

The Andromeda Galaxy is the furthest “thing” we can see in the night sky with the naked eye. This galaxy is 2.5 million light years away. Using the above facts, this means that when we see the Andromeda Galaxy in the night sky we are seeing it as it was 2.5 million years ago. That means in order for us to be able to see it today it must be at least 2.5 million years old.

Now for my question:

If the Earth and Universe is only 6000 - 8000 years old, as per the YEC belief, how is it possible for the Andromeda Galaxy to be 2.5 million years old?

I am really interested in your answer as this question is not based on a theory or guesswork, but fact. As you YECs like to say “Please stay on topic” when answering. If you cannot answer, surely this, therefore, disproves your YEC belief?
